Aurora Feint, a high-profile mobile game developer, announced recently that they will be releasing a new multiplayer development kit named PlayTime. This kit will allow game developers to easily create games that allow for mulitple players to play across iOS and Android devices in real-time.
Aurora Feint is best know for their very successful social gaming network, Open Feint. If you’ve played your share of iOS games, you have surely been asked to sign in as it currently ties into over 2400 games across iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices. This system provides the gamer a system of tracking achievements, game leaderboards and supports head-to-head matches on some games. The new PlayTime system will be released as a part of Open Feint.
The developer indicated they have an interesting way of handling game dropouts. Instead of stopping the game, the system will attempt to match up another player and put them in place of the one who dropped off. Now, this doesn’t sound ideal, but it’s an attempt to address a real problem in real-time mobile multiplayer gaming. Mobile gaming is in typically something that’s done when someone has a few minutes here and there, so game sessions tend to be short. Also gaming on the go has the inevitable issue off keeping a solid connection (with some networks and locations being better than others). With those issues, head-to-head gaming can be frustrating on any mobile platform to say the least.
With the release said to be “later this year” we should start seeing games incorporate PlayTime early in 2011.
